Thereareothermarvelstobeamazedbysuchasatransformationscenewhereawomanmutatesintoasetoflips!Othertransformationsaretoohorrifyingtodiscussandthentherearethosesacredtoothpicksplantedintoaheadlesslivingcorpseaswellasanarrayofspectacularspecialeffects.Thisfilmhastheabilitytostuneventhemostjadedhorrorfilmfanwithitsspectacularlystrangeplot,themagnificentgoreandspecialeffectsbutperhapstherealstrengthofthefilmisthatitsmind-bogglingplotiscompletelyhomespunandnotjustliftedfromsomerecentHollywoodhitthoughtherewillbethosewhowillrecallthemoonlightdanceroutinecompletewithrollingheadbythegraveinEvilDead2thatwasalsosuchadelight.ItshouldbenotedatthispointthatthisfilmwasmadebeforeEvilDeadeversawthelightofdaysothequestionofborrowingdoesn't’tarise. Yetthetemptationisoftentooveranalyse,asifbyofjustification:OnecouldwellimaginesomegrandLegendoftheSevenGoldenVampiresstylethesiswherebytheanthropologistbecomesemblematicofwesternimperialism,purportingtobeinterestedinunderstandingnativeculturebutreallyonlyimposingherexistingdefinitionsuponitasOther,withherpossessiontherebyasomewhatjustifiableindigenousresponsetothishubris.SuchareadingwouldthendoubtlesscontinuewiththefigureofMaxasinstrumentalindefeatingtheSeaQueeninsavingErikaassymptomaticofaparadoxicalcounterposingstatementtotheeffectthatIndonesianscannotdowithouttheirwesternallies–anddoubtlessthewholethingwouldthenbereadasacodedcritiqueand/orendorsementoftheSuhartoregime,dependingonthespin.
