Itisalsoaninterestingfilm.ThefusionoftraditionalIndonesianmythandwesternscience-fictionmayneverquitecomeoff,butthecollisionofculturesandideasatleastprovidesplentyoffoodforthought,withwhatisrelativelychasematerialbycomparisionwithwesterntrashcinemastandards–onethinksofLinaRomay'snotdissimilarfemmecatastricesinJessFranco'sFemaleVampireandDorianaGreyortheoutrightpornoofTheSperimator–butwhichwouldseemtohavepushedtheboundariesasfarastheIndonesianauthortieswereconcerned,withthefilmhavingapparentlybeenbannedintheterritoryatonepoint. Yetthetemptationisoftentooveranalyse,asifbyofjustification:OnecouldwellimaginesomegrandLegendoftheSevenGoldenVampiresstylethesiswherebytheanthropologistbecomesemblematicofwesternimperialism,purportingtobeinterestedinunderstandingnativeculturebutreallyonlyimposingherexistingdefinitionsuponitasOther,withherpossessiontherebyasomewhatjustifiableindigenousresponsetothishubris.SuchareadingwouldthendoubtlesscontinuewiththefigureofMaxasinstrumentalindefeatingtheSeaQueeninsavingErikaassymptomaticofaparadoxicalcounterposingstatementtotheeffectthatIndonesianscannotdowithouttheirwesternallies–anddoubtlessthewholethingwouldthenbereadasacodedcritiqueand/orendorsementoftheSuhartoregime,dependingonthespin. Themoreprosaictruth,however,issurelythatthepresenceofthewesternerswasfirstandforemostameansofenhancingLadyTerminator'sofficepotentialontheexportmarket–atestamenttoculturalimperialismitself,tobesure,buthardlyonethatrequiresintellectualgymnastics.
